Re: Lake Lowering
By Art Mucci
/ Ron McDougal
While the lake is lowered many property owners have indicated that they intend to repair piers, boat docks and retaining
walls, as well as clean up the vegetation that has grown around their: property. The Callender Lake/Hickory Hills Fish
& Wildlife Committees would like to offer some recommendations relative to what herbicides, if any, would be
effective on the vegetation. A call was made to Mr. Stan Smith, Aquatic Management Services, and the following
information is provided. The below listed aquatic herbicides, while effective on some vegetation when lake levels are
normal, are expensive and non-effective when the lake is down:
Aquaclear, liquid or pellets
Aquashadow or Aquashade
Aquastar & Shor-Klear liquid
Aquathol Super K granular
Cide-Kick II
Cutrine-Plus, liquid or granular
Sonar, liquid or granular
Weedline-D, liquid
The following herbicides are NOT recommended for use at any time:
Aquacade pellets/2-4D
Hydrothol 191, granular
Round-Up or any non-aquatic approved herbicide
There is a new herbicide called "Habitat" that has been indicated by some users as effective. The spreading of lime over
the area after removing the vegetation has also been stated as preventing or at least slowing down new growth. Neither
of the above methods or products has been validated. The best measure is a “strong back, sharp hoe, good rake and a lot
of patience”.
Once the vegetation is removed, it is requested that property owners let it dry where it lays and then burn when
completely dried. Please do not bring the wet vegetation and place it on the burn pile, or the trash dumpsters, as it will
not immediately burn and it creates a very strong and unpleasant odor.
It is also requested that those property owners who are repairing piers, boat docks and retaining walls remind their
contractors that all old material must be removed from the premise. Please do not allow them to place this old material
in either the dumpsters or the burn pile.
The Hickory Hills/Callender Lake Fish & Wildlife Committees, as well as both Boards request the support of all
property owners in this clean-up/repair effort. Thank you in advance for your efforts and compliance.
